Hi John,

Kim and I are discussing entering gift cards for about 4,000 cards a year.

I have the following questions about the possibilities of tracking the distribution and usage of these cards.
1. Can we add a magnetic strip reader that can be used to enter the cards individually into the inventory?
2. Do we have the system capacity to support the 4,000 additional inventory items?
3. Can we connect/import and link the data source by the magnetic strip number from a spreadsheet listing of the cards that are redeemed to reconcile the ones used versus the ones given?

Thanks again for all of your help,
Holland Nance

Hi Holland,

Thanks for the post.

Let me have a look for you..

1. Yes you can purchase magnetic strip readers for PCs, they work in a similar way to barcode scanners. They'll input whatever is scanned into whatever field the cursor is on in Windows. So you could create a new item, put the cursor in the barcode field and then read the card, it will then input the cards number.

2. How many inventory items do you currently have? I've tested a typical PC with 10,000 items and there was no noticeable slowdown. If you're going much more than that then you might want to run some tests first to make sure the PC is fast enough or you could use iMagic Inventory for MS SQL Server which has a larger capacity.

3. If I understand you correctly then yes. You could have a list in, say Excel, that has the card number and stock quantity. The stock would be either 0 (sold) or 1 (not sold). You can then import via File/Import Inventory. You can export via File/Export Inventory or run a report, if you put the cards into their own unique inventory location then you can filter by the location (such as the Stock Location Report).

Regards, John
